Wizards of Waverly Place is getting a sequel series, it has been confirmed, with Selena Gomez set to return in the pilot episode.
The Disney series followed Alex Russo (Gomez), who trains in the art of magic alongside brothers Justin (David Henrie) and Max (Jake T Austin), with the trio competing to be the next family wizard.
The series ended in 2012 after four seasons and 106 episodes before a standalone special, The Wizards Return: Alex vs Alex, was released in 2013, but Deadline has reported that a sequel series is now in the works.
The series will follow Justin as an adult after leaving his wizarding past behind, picking up as he forms a life with his wife and two sons.
Following an incident at WizTech and the arrival of a young wizard in need of training, Justin is forced to confront his past in order to preserve the future of the wizarding world.
Naturally, Henrie will reprise his role in a regular role, with Gomez appearing as Alex in a guest role during the pilot episode. It's currently unknown if Austin, David DeLuise and Maria Canals-Barrera will reprise their roles as the other members of the Russo family.
The new cast will include Janice LeAnn Brown, Alkaio Thiele and Mimi Gianopulos, whilst Henrie and Gomez serve as executive producers. Andy Fickman, best known for Race to Witch Mountain and Playing with Fire, will direct the series in addition to producing.
Since her breakout role on Wizards of Waverly Place, Gomez has appeared as Mabel Mora in Only Murders in the Building, which was renewed for a fourth season towards the end of 2023.
The Wizards of Waverly Place sequel series currently has no release date.
