A man whose grandma and wife have both worked tirelessly at Grimsby Hospital's Outpatients Department for many years is aiming to raise £10,000 to build a brand new, state-of-the-art, "lifeline" sensory play area for children being seen within the hospital.

Jake Robertson, 27, from Grimsby said he was inspired by the dedication of his grandma - who has worked at the hospital for more than 50 years - and his wife, who have both cared for many young patients in the Outpatients Department over the years.

By running the ABP Half Marathon in September, Jake hopes to raise £10,000 for the Health Tree Foundation to build a large outdoor sensory play area at the hospital which he feels will make a "huge difference" to the lives of poorly children in the area.

Speaking to Grimsby Live, Jake said: "My grandma has worked at the hospital for 50 odd years and she's really passionate about her job, so I think that rubs off a little bit on me, and my wife works there so I've lived and breathed it. I've witnessed firsthand their dedication.

"They've seen countless children enduring treatments without the joy of outdoor play. That's why I'm stepping up, to make sure every child has access to a sensory play area within the hospital walls. I know it would be a massive help to local children and a massive lifeline for them.

"I've got two kids, one of whom was born early, but fortunately neither of them have never been through the Outpatients Department. If that ever happens it's unthinkable, but you want your child to be in the best possible place, so I think this play area would make such a difference in the area.

"For any child struggling with any illness, the first port of call is the hospital's Outpatients Department after they've been to the GP, so it's a widely used facility that we need to keep updating."

In a bid to raise the much-needed funds, Jake has launched a JustGiving page. At the time of writing, he has raised £350.

The description reads: "What difference will this make, you ask? Picture this – children laughing, playing, and simply being kids, even in the midst of treatment and appointments. It's not just about fun; it's about reducing stress for both the children and their families.

"Treatment can be daunting for kids, especially in a clinical environment. But with this play area, we're offering a much-needed distraction. For children with life changing conditions, it's a chance to escape the routine and find comfort outdoors.

"Our vision? A vibrant space filled with laughter and joy, where children can forget about their discomfort, if only for a moment. Your donation won't just be a drop in the bucket; it'll directly fund the creation of this play area, giving children the freedom to play and heal.

"Diana Princess Of Wales Hospital isn't just a local institution; it's a lifeline for our community. The staff have thrown their full support behind this fundraiser, grateful for the opportunity to enhance the care they provide.

"I'm reaching out to our community, asking for your support to make this dream a reality. This play area isn't just about fun – it's about healing. By providing a space for play and recreation, we're helping children feel safer, calmer, and ultimately, get better sooner."
