What you need to know about Seventeen, Glastonbury's first K-Pop group

The 2024 Glastonbury line-up has been revealed and Seventeen have made history as the first K-Pop group to appear at the renowned music festival.

The boy band are set to perform on the Pyramid stage at the event, which is taking place from the 26 to 30 June. They are joining the likes of Dua Lipa, Coldplay, SZA, and Shania Twain on the stage, which is one of the biggest at the event.

Who are Seventeen?

Seventeen debuted in South Korea in 2015, and their star has only continued to rise ever since. The group consists of 13 members: S.Coups, Jeonghan, Joshua, Jun, Hoshi, Wonwoo, Woozi, DK, Mingyu, The8, Seungkwan, Vernon, and Dino.

The name Seventeen stems from the group having 13 members, divided into three groups (Hip-Hop, vocals, and performance), that consists of one unit. They are known as a "self-producing" boy band, meaning they write their own songs, and are involved in music production, choreography and more.

Prior to their debut, the group's members appeared on the show Seventeen Project: Big Debut Plan which helped to introduce them to K-Pop fans.

After their debut the boy band became hugely popular, starting their career with their hit EP 17 Carat which became the longest-charting K-pop album in America in 2015. The group have since released four studio albums and 12 EPs in Korean, as well as several Japanese albums.

Starting strong, the band launched their first studio album Love & Letter in 2016, which brought them success both domestically and abroad. Their lead single Very Nice brought them a lot of attention and has been viewed over 130 million times on YouTube.

But their biggest achievement came in 2020 when their album Heng:garae sold over 1 million copies within five days of release. The album ranked third in South Korea's all-time weekly album sales at the time, only trailing behind BTS’s Map of the Soul: 7 and Map of the Soul: Persona.

The group landing a primetime slot at Glastonbury shows their continued growth and popularity as K-Pop artists. While they are the first K-Pop band to appear at Glastonbury, Seventeen are not the first Korean group to land a festival slot in general in the West.

Coachella has been home to a number of K-Pop artists over the years, with Blackpink making their debut in 2019 and Big Bang appearing there in 2020 as part of their reunion comeback. Blackpink went on to make history by headlining the festival in 2023, and they headlined BST Hyde Park the same year.

Glastonbury 2024 takes place between Wednesday 26 and Sunday 30 June 2024.
