A body has been recovered from the River Thames in the search for a man who disappeared near a sailing club, police have said.

Officers at Surrey Police said they were called to a stretch of waterway near the Desborough Sailing Club in Shepperton on Thursday evening.

Members of the public had reported that the man had gone underwater and failed to resurface.

In a statement on Friday, Surrey Police said: “Sadly, a man’s body was recovered from the river in the early hours of this morning.

“His next of kin are aware and are being supported by specially trained officers”.

They added: “We are treating the death as unexplained, but do not believe at this stage that there was anyone else involved.

“A file will be prepared and passed to the coroner.”
