Sheridan Smith is reportedly on the verge of signing a deal to star in the final episode of Gavin and Stacey, according to insiders.

The narrative that James Corden and Ruth Jones have crafted for the finale is said to include Sheridan's character Ruth 'Rudi' Smith. Despite rumours to the contrary, sources close to the BBC show reveal that informal talks with the actress have already commenced.

This TV deal, following the premature closure of Sheridan's West End stage show Opening Night, will likely stun millions of fans as she was absent from the 2019 Christmas Special.

An insider shared: "The script for Gavin and Stacey: The Finale includes all of the show's major players - including Smithy's sister Rudi. Nothing has been signed and conversations are still very much ongoing - especially as the filming date has not been set."

"But all of the stops are being pulled out to make sure the whole cast are there, and in the coming weeks the production team hope to pin down everyone's availability. Sheridan and James are still friendly - they recently bumped into each other at the Variety Club Awards and got on really well. So the hope is that she will be able to be part of it.", reports the Mirror.

"She did not appear in the Christmas Special because her character was not part of that storyline, but it has been a different story this time around. Everyone is very excited about this episode - it is going to be a phenomenal last hurrah for the series, which is exactly what it deserves."

James, 45, and Ruth, 57, set the rumour mill into overdrive last month when they tantalised fans with a snapshot of a script titled Gavin and Stacey: The Finale - a full five years after viewers were left hanging following Nessa's cliff-hanger proposal to Smithy in the 2019 Christmas Special.

The beloved series, which initially graced screens on BBC2 before graduating to BBC One, spanned three seasons from 2007 to 2010. It starred Ruth and James as the iconic Nessa and Smithy, alongside Matt Horne and Joanna Page as the eponymous Gavin and Stacey, charting the ups and downs of their romance against the backdrop of their families' lives, split between Billericay in Essex and Barry Island in Wales.

Sheridan also became a fan favourite for her portrayal of Smithy's outspoken sister - who, much to his chagrin, insisted on sharing his nickname. The pair's rendition of a rap duet to the tune of American Boy became one of the sitcom's standout scenes.

Despite their often contentious on-screen sibling dynamic, there were moments of genuine warmth, such as when Ruth's character reassured Smithy in a touching scene, saying: "You ain't heavy, you're my brother."

Behind the scenes, Sheridan and James's relationship began in 2007 but hit rocky ground by 2008, evidenced when James ambiguously stated: "It's complicated."

They briefly rekindled their romance, only to part ways definitively in 2009. James, who once called Sheridan "the love of his life" later expressed how the separation left him feeling "heartbroken and lost".

However, after meeting his wife Julia Carey, the couple went on to have three children together, Max, Carey and Charlotte. On the other hand, Sheridan, who has a son named Billy with her ex-boyfriend Jamie Horn, recently ended her relationship with her boxer boyfriend Dave 'Rocky' Ryan.
