Shikellamy receives $472,500 in afterschool program funds

Apr. 16—SUNBURY — The Shikellamy School District afterschool STEAM Program will receive $472,500 after being awarded the Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers Cohort 12 grant, according to officials.

Shikellamy has been the recipient of grant funds since 2007 when it first introduced afterschool and summer programming through 21st Century funding, officials said.

The program serves students in kindergarten through eighth grades with STEM enrichment programs and high school credit recovery courses for students in ninth through 12th grades.

The afterschool STEAM Program offers a wide range of activities designed to enhance academic achievement, foster social-emotional development, and cultivate life skills. From homework assistance and tutoring sessions to recreational and cultural activities, afterschool STEAM empowers students to explore their interests, build confidence, and develop valuable relationships with peers and mentors, according to program director Travis Stevens.

According to Superintendent Jason Bendle, Stevens continues to work with district administration to explore opportunities for growth while meeting the new academic standards for Science and Technology.

Pennsylvania's STEELS standards address Science, Technology, Engineering, Environmental Literacy and Sustainability and will be an important part of the programming that takes place in afterschool and summer STEAM, Bendle said.

"The afterschool program plays a vital role in the lives of the children and families we serve," Stevens said. "It provides a structured environment where children can receive academic support, engage in activities, and build meaningful relationships. We are incredibly grateful for the continued support of our partners, parents and community, whose generosity allows us to make a positive difference in the lives of so many."

Bendle said he was happy to receive the funding.

"Through this funding, we will be able to continue our Chief Shikellamy Elementary afterschool program and our high school credit recovery program," he said.

The Afterschool STEAM Program takes place for the three hours immediately following the school day and offers a five-week summer program for students in all grade levels. For more information regarding afterschool STEAM, you can visit the Shikellamy School District website.

Shikellamy school Director Slade Shreck said he is proud of the program.

"The STEAM program is a great program for our kids," he said. "The more kids that take advantage of the program, the better. It's a laid back atmosphere and kids get to do so many things. I have seen amazing things happen in this program."
