Shocking moment sisters left fighting for life as driver runs over them in pub car park

This was the shocking moment a banned driver reversed over two sisters - leaving them trapped under his vehicle and fighting for life. Nicholas Adams was jailed after the horrifying incident in the car park of a West Bromwich pub on October 15 last year.

CCTV captured the moment Adams - who was disqualified from driving for 12 months three days before the crash for drink-driving - shot backwards at speed. He hit the sisters, aged 76 and 82 - and ploughed into a flower bed.

Adams, with two others, had pulled up on The Dovecote pub's car park in a Vauxhall Insignia at around 12.30pm. He was in the passenger seat.

After a minor collision on the car park, Adams decided to get into the driver’s seat of the Vauxhall and move the vehicle. He didn’t close the door and his leg was seen hanging outside the car.

One of the victims spent six weeks in hospital with multiple serious fractures to her body. The other spent ten weeks in hospital, also with multiple serious fractures.

Police officers arrested Adams who was later charged with two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He was sentenced at Wolverhampton Crown Court to three years and 11 months behind bars and banned from driving for two years.

In a joint statement, the two victims paid thanks to the emergency services, specifically Pc Glenn Brabham, from West Midlands Police's firearms unit, who was one of the first officers on scene. They said: “My sister and I cannot thank enough the professionals who helped us both on that day and during our long road to recovery.

“We would like to thank all the emergency services who came to our rescue on that day. Especially Pc Brabham, who play played an important part in getting us from under the car.

“Also, many thanks to the doctors and staff at the Queen Elizabeth hospital, Birmingham. Without your help it could have been a different story.”

Pc Brabham courageously manoeuvred himself beneath the Vauxhall to get to the two women and managed to rescue one of them before the fire service rescued the other. He said: “I’d like to extend my best wishes to both ladies for their continued recovery and it makes me happy to hear how well they’ve done so far.

“It’s a privilege to do my job and I’m proud of what my colleagues and the other emergency services do every day.”

Pc Brabham was named the overall winner of the West Midlands Police Federation Bravery Awards earlier this year.
