‘Shogun’ Wraps a Sensational Season Atop Streaming Charts

Streaming TV is frequently defined by shows that burn brightly, but ultimately burn out quickly. Research shows that the biggest streaming shows usually receive the bulk of their viewership within the first two weeks they are made available. The streaming chart on the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report consistently features premieres that enter the chart one week and are gone two or three weeks later.

There are exceptions, of course, and perhaps none is better than “Shōgun.” The show’s finale brought it to the top of the chart for the week of April 22 to 28, capping an impressive 10-week run during which it never fell out of the Top 3 most-watched shows. While the FX/Hulu miniseries had all the hallmarks of prestige TV, it’s still impressive that a reboot of a 1980s series about feudal-era Japan has been 2024’s biggest breakout hit.

It topped two other buzzed-about titles this week, making “Shōgun’s” feat even more impressive. “Anything But You,” a rom-com that was released in theaters in December and added to Netflix in April, was seen in 1.6 million U.S. households over its first six days. At No. 3 is the post-apocalyptic video game adaptation “Fallout” on Amazon Prime Video, after two weeks in the top spot.

“Baby Reindeer,” the Netflix thriller series, rides some word-of-mouth buzz to land at No. 4 this week, up from No. 6. “Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver,” the second half of Zach Snyder’s Netflix sci-fi epic, moves up to No. 5. It sat at No. 7 a week ago.

Hulu’s second entry this week is “Under the Bridge,” a based-on-a-true-story murder mystery series. It lands at No. 6. That’s followed in seventh by the Netflix reality series “Unlocked: A Jail Experiment,” which stays on the charts for a third consecutive week.

The next two entries, both on Netflix, are all older theatrical releases getting new life on streaming. “Smurfs: The Lost Village,” a 2017 animated film starring the famous blue creatures, is No. 8, while “King Richard,” the Will Smith-led 2021 Oscar-winning sports drama, is No. 9. Rounding out the Top 10 is “The Circle,” Netflix’s competition series. The first episodes of the show’s sixth season were added to Netflix on April 17.

Linear TV is still all about the performance. “American Idol” on ABC claims both the No. 1 and No. 3 spots this week. Sandwiched in between at No. 2 is “Idol’s” primary competition, “The Voice” on NBC.

CBS continues to have some of the most popular scripted shows on air right now, placing a trio on this week’s chart. “FBI” is No. 4, followed by “The Equalizer” is No. 5, and “FBI: International” is No. 8.

“Wheel of Fortune” is a linear chart mainstay, and this week it claims two spots, No. 6 and No. 9. “Survivor” comes in at No. 7 and “America’s Funniest Home Videos” is at No. 10.

The Wrap Report provides an exclusive first look at the most watched movies and TV series from the past week across both streaming and linear television sourced from viewership trends collected from Samba TV’s panel of more than 3 million households, balanced to the U.S. Census.
