Shoppers 'tired' of sky high food costs amid stagnant prices at every supermarket

Shoppers are wondering whether prices are ever going to start falling amid stagnant shopping bills.

It's now been more than two years since we started tracking the cost of the same eight staples at the six main supermarkets to see how they compare.

Prices have soared over that time, with just two examples being a two-pint bottle of milk, up from 95p to the current £1.20, and chicken breasts up from £1.79 to £2.35.

But with bills rising across the board this month as we move into a new financial year, shoppers are all asking the same question.

"I really am tired of going to the store and having to examine the prices," one told us. "When will we ever be able to go food shopping without worrying how much it's going to cost us?"

Another said: "I used to just nip in to grab a few extra things during the week, now I'm trying to avoid that and make do with what we have as it's just too expensive."

Lidl remains cheapest for the basket of essentials this week - made up of tea bags, milk, bread, butter, coffee, beans, chicken and mince.

But even that, at £12.02, is almost a third (32%) higher than it was when we started monitoring prices in March 2022. The most expensive, Morrisons, with a bill of £12.37, is up b 28%.

Aldi remains second cheapest, at £12.14, followed by Tesco at £12.22, and Asda and Sainsbury's, both £12.33.

Aldi disputes the results of our weekly comparison, saying that it does not take into account like-for-like products or ‘the higher quality’ of its products. The supermarket says, for example, that Aldi beans are 20g heavier than Sainsbury's and that Aldi teabags are 'better quality than the comparative products used'.

Asda also disagrees with our comparison and says that our small sample of products does not represent the fuller picture of prices and does not account for its deals. The supermarket says that, across the board, its Just Essentials range is the largest and cheapest available, alongside Aldi's.

Inflation has fallen to its lowest level in two-and-a-half years, yet lower inflation does not mean prices overall are coming down, they are just rising less quickly. Certain products including meat have come down over recent weeks, but generally goods are still much more expensive than they were two years ago.
