Life by You, a game positioned as a potential competitor to The Sims, has been cancelled by Paradox Interactive.

Developed by Paradox Tectonic, the life simulation game has experienced a difficult time in development.

A full trailer that was unveiled in March 2023 had a mixed reception, and an early access release – at first planned for September 2023 – was delayed on three separate occasions.

After missing its third date target of June 4, the game's cancellation was confirmed in a post on Paradox Interactive's forums.

"Sadly, we've decided to cancel the release of our long-awaited life sim Life by You," Paradox Interactive deputy CEO Mattias Lilja said. "This was an incredibly difficult call to make and is a clear failure on Paradox's part to meet both our own and the community's expectations.

"Life by You has been in the works for a long time, and we've been excited about the promise and the potential of this game.

"Our hope was always that it would be able to leave a mark in this exciting and new genre for us. That's why we opted to delay it twice, to give the studio and the game a fair shot at realising the potential we saw.

"For each delay we made, we've seen incremental improvements, which in hindsight may well have led us to focus on details rather than the whole picture."

Lilja continued by saying that after re-evaluating where the game was at, Paradox Interactive felt that it remained "lacking in some key areas".

Paradox considered giving the developer more time, but decided it was best to put an end to the project.

"It became clear to us that the road leading to a release that we felt confident about was far too long and uncertain," Lilja explained.

"This is not to say the game has not shown any promising qualities. Life by You had a number of strengths and the hard work of a dedicated team that went into realising them.

"However, when we came to a point where we believe that more time will not get us close enough to a version we would be satisfied with, then we believe it is better to stop.

"This is obviously tough and disappointing for everyone who poured their time and enthusiasm into this project, especially when our decision comes so late in the process."

Paralives – another game marked as a potential Sims competitor – remains scheduled for an early access release on Steam in 2025. The developer said in February that all of its expansions will be free.

The Sims 4 is also gearing up for its next expansion, which is planned for this summer and looks set to offer new gameplay for romances.
