Sinead O'Connor's Nothing Compares 2 U streamed over a million times after singer's death

The Irish musician died yesterday after being found unresponsive at her home in London

Sinead O'Connor's biggest hit Nothing Compares 2 U was streamed over a million times in one day according to Spotify.

The Irish musician died on Wednesday after being found unresponsive at her home in south London and fans paid tribute to her by streaming her music.

According to Spotify, Nothing Compares 2 U was streamed more than 1.2 million times on the day she died and entered the streaming company's global chart for the first time.

The song, which was originally written by Prince, is O'Connor's best known hit and spent four weeks at the top of the charts in the US and was the second best selling single of 1990 in the UK. In 1990 alone, the song sold 3.5 million copies around the world.

O'Connor later became the subject of controversy after tearing up a picture of the pope on Saturday Night Live in protest of child sexual abuse within the Catholic Church.

According to London's Metropolitan Police, O'Connor's death at the age of 56 is not being treated as suspicious. In a statement, they said she was found "unresponsive" and "pronounced dead at the scene" but no cause of death has yet been confirmed.

Her death was announced by her family in a statement on Wednesday evening and a number of musicians have since paid tribute to her including Cat Stevens, Pink and collaborators Massive Attack.

Tributes have poured in from around the world following her death, with musicians, artists and politicians sharing how much she meant to them.

Kate Bush wrote on her website: “It’s like a light has gone out, hasn’t it? A beacon on a high mountain.

“Sinead didn’t just move us with her incredibly emotive voice, she stood up with it.

“I salute her. We were lucky to have such a magical presence move among us.”
