Coronation Street's Sinead received the tragic news this week that she has four months at most left to live. She was diagnosed with terminal cancer after discovering a lump on her neck, and the cancer has spread to both her lymph nodes and liver.

Since then, Sinead (Katie McGlynn) been thinking about extra support, so visited a hospice in last night's episode (September 16). The nurse who showed her and husband Daniel (Rob Mallard) around is someone you might recognise as a familiar face.

Sheila is played by Helen Sheals, who Downton Abbey fans will remember as village post mistress Mrs Wigan.

Helen appeared in a handful of episodes throughout Downton's six-year run, including the very first one back in 2010 – although she doesn't appear in the movie.

Her other TV credits include Silent Witness, Brookside (where she played Jan Murray), and both Casualty and Holby City.

And she's also appeared in Coronation Street before – in 2009, she briefly played Lilly Richardson, mother of Sophie Webster's teenage sweetheart Ben Richardson.

Sinead's storyline saw her visit a doctor who gave her the news that her cancer was terminal – and he was played by someone else who may be familiar to soap fans.

Oncologist Mr Merchant was played by Raji James, who played Ash Ferreira in EastEnders between 2003 and 2005. He has also appeared in The Bill, Doctor Who ('Army of Ghosts') and played Abdul Khan in the 1999 film version of East is East.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
