Sir Alex Ferguson enjoys Scotland party as Manchester United legend is spotted in Germany

Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson has touched down in Munich to witness the highly-anticipated Euro 2024 opener between Scotland and Germany.

Mingling with fans, the Scot was seen in good spirits as he took time to pose for photos with the Tartan Army's contingent from Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire.

Scottish fans have arrived in swathes across Germany, and countless others are expected to throng to various locations within Scottish cities where live screening events have been organised.

And the buzz of the city centre around Marienplatz, where Scottish supporters are congregating, only increased following the appearance of the Glaswegian, reports the Mirror. Ferguson, who once steered Scotland at the 1986 World Cup, joined his compatriots in support for what is only their sixth major tournament appearance since that time.

The 82-year-old had been among the coaching staff prior to the 1986 tournament when Jock Stein, then in charge of the national team, died in September 1985. Ferguson stepped into the role on a temporary basis, leading his country to Mexico where Scotland suffered a group stage exit following defeats to Denmark and West Germany.

Ferguson stepped down after the tournament and would be appointed manager at Manchester United in November that year. The rest is history.

Germany are the third favourites to win the tournament, trailing behind France and England. Despite the odds being heavily stacked against Scotland, fans remain hopeful for a positive outcome in Friday night's game.

Scotland has yet to secure a victory against Germany in a competitive match, with only one win out of their last nine games a 2-0 friendly triumph over Gibraltar earlier this month.
