Sisters behind The Dolls House beauty brand and how their dream became reality

Sisters with a flair for makeup accepted a challenge which would see them create a thriving cosmetics business all of their own.

Charlotte and Molly Kirk, 32 and 27 respectively, turned a chance opportunity into a thriving beauty empire without ever leaving their roots. They boast more than a decade of experience each and were able to flourish in The Dolls House, a beauty haven for anyone in need of a glam squad.

Located in Maghull, the salon allowed Charlotte and Molly to build a loyal client base but little did they know it would one day be theirs. Charlotte told the ECHO: "We always wanted our own thing together and we always said wouldn't it be great to have the Dolls House. The old owners basically stepped away and asked if we wanted it and we were kind of shocked. We instantly said yes and The Dolls House became ours. It happened so fast and suddenly but it was like a dream come true.

"It was daunting but [the previous owner] didn't want to give it to anyone else. We had no business experience and we struggled a lot but we learned along the way."

With their dream venue locked in, the sisters' attention turned to the products they were using. Clients would often quiz them both on what was being applied which soon spiralled into the idea that they should launch their own brand. The Dolls House cosmetics line came to fruition in 2019 but wasn't without extra work.

Charlotte said: "It was daunting because it was a massive workload to deal with. We didn't just buy from developers we had to start from scratch and tweak everything over and over. It can take a year to 18 months to get something right. It's still difficult to adapt our lip gloss collection but we persevere."

In 2023 the girls took their business one step further with the opening of a warehouse headquarters in Kirkby. Under its roof is hundreds of cosmetics from liquid glitter eyeshadow and blush potions to lip oils and glosses. Stock doesn't last long as the demand from clients and customers has been overwhelming to manage.

Charlotte said: "The response from people has been amazing. We had a slow first two years because we didn't have a good website but in 2022 we changed over to TikTok, switched to Shopify and it started to get really intense. TikTok blew up for us. Our friends and family are so supportive too. They're always picking up and buying things to help us out."

Humbly speaking, Charlotte admitted the level of success they've achieved isn't something they focus on as they're always looking to the future. She said: "We should do it more. We never look back and think of how far we come. We always look forward and we'll never be satisfied but it's all positive. We should appreciate how far we've come but we're excited to see where we end up.

"People ask if we argue but we get on really well. We don't have disagreements and we're always on the same page in terms of the business and products. Molly is so laid back, she's not hard work, which probably means I'm the nightmare to deal with!

"We don't have a shopfront yet so we're hoping to add a section for it in our warehouse so anyone can enter straight into a store and grab what they need. We also want to get on board with the likes of Beauty Bay and ASOS. There's so much we want to do I could write you a list!"
