Six UK airports bring back 'much hated' rule and 'it's madness'

Six UK airports have brought back a much-hated rule amid confusion over regulations and restrictions for holidaymakers. Six major transport hubs in Britain have reintroduced the 100ml liquid rule - after restrictions were eased as part of new scanners.

The change came into effect from midnight June 9 and is in place at Newcastle, Leeds Bradford, London City, Aberdeen, Southend and Teesside airports. All six affected have Next Generation Security Checkpoints (NGSC) in full operation.

The six had ditched the 100ml liquid rules having brought in the high-tech CT scanners. The Department for Transport said bringing back the restrictions would "enable further improvements to be made to the new checkpoint systems" and was not a response to any specific threat.

Responding to the news, a tourist said: "Doesn't surprise me at City airport last week they checked all the liquids in the luggage anyway and that caused delays and chaos." A second said: "They are just tweaking the calibration of the machines to ensure they pick up everything. It’s only temporary and will likely need doing several times until they get it right. I’d rather they did it and kept everyone safe than just not bother."

"Of course they would imagine everyone bringing their own water, bigger bottles of sun cream etc the damage will cause the shops within airport security area and airport profits. It is about money at the end of the day..." a third chimed in.

And another raged: "I came through Manchester on Friday and there was a 30 minute wait if your bag needed checking at security. UK airports are a joke and by far 1 of the worst when it comes to security checks. Why on earth they need “random” checks when 8/10 bags are being checked anyway is beyond me!!

"I was once flying out of America and the security queue was enormous, they literally stopped everything and told everyone to place everything in their bags and hold it in their right hand whilst they brought the sniffer dogs in and walked them down the line. They literally cleared the security hall in less than 10 minutes.

"Have a lip balm in your bag in the UK and you’re stood in that 30 minute queue! Madness!!"
