Sky axes second season of The RisingSky - Sky

It has been reported that Sky has axed the second season of The Rising, just two months before it was set to begin production.

The supernatural thriller that starred Clara Rugaard, I Hate Suzie's Daniel Ings and Silent Witness star Emily Taaffe, followed Rugaard's character Neve's ghost as she attempted to solve her own murder.

The second season due to be called Risen was meant to mark the start of an anthology series for the franchise, where each season would have the same cast and themes, but explore a different storyline.

However, it seems production will not be going ahead. A source told Variety: "It was canceled before they were due to start filming. All the cast and everything [were ready to go] and they just pulled the plug."

Although Sky had never publicly confirmed a second season, showrunner Pete McTighe revealed last year that he had started working on the next instalment.

He told Radio Times: "I have already written a plan for a second [season], and I think it’s really exciting and interesting. I don’t want to say too much because I don’t want to jinx it. I want it to happen."

McTighe, who has previously written for Doctor Who and A Discovery of Witches, also told National World that he hoped the show would run for multiple seasons.

"I also hope people really respond to it so that we can make more stories in that universe, really, because I’ve got plenty of ideas," he shared.

"I think this is a show that could run and run potentially – so fingers crossed, we’ll be able to do that."

The eight-part series, which was based on the Belgian drama Hotel Beau Séjour, marked the first Sky drama produced entirely in-house by Sky Studios.
