Smallville's Tom Welling has hinted that he could have been playing Superman again on The CW's Supergirl.

Welling played the pre-Man of Steel Clark Kent on Smallville, which isn't connected to Supergirl in any way, but it still had some thinking he might play Superman before the role went to Tyler Hoechlin.

And it seems that there was a slight chance that Welling could have been Superman again.

"I know Greg [Berlanti] quite well and there had been some discussion, but they're different worlds. There was an idea that maybe Supergirl, appearing on that, but it's such a different show," he told EW.

"I'm older now, I don't look the same. Appearing on that show as Clark Kent or even Superman, for me, I would not want to watch me do that at all. They just have such a different tone."

Instead, Welling will soon be seen in Lucifer season three as police lieutenant Marcus Pierce, who rubs Lucifer up the wrong way as a rival for Decker's (Lauren German) affection.

"Lucifer is still DC, so in some ways it's one foot in, one foot out, but it wasn't a motivator for me to join the show. It just so happens that it was connected in that way," he explained.

Lucifer returns in the US on Monday, October 2 on Fox in the US, and will eventually air on Amazon Prime in the UK.
