Smallville star Allison Mack has been released from prison early over the NXIVM case.

The actress was sentenced to three years behind bars in 2021 over her involvement in the cult, which was involved in sex trafficking.

However, it has been confirmed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons that Mack was released on Monday (July 3) after serving two years of her sentence.

Mack pleaded guilty back in 2019 to racketeering charges and cooperated with investigators, including testimony against NXIVM's leader Keith Raniere, who was convicted of sex trafficking charges and other criminalities in 2020 and sentenced to 120 years in prison.

Mack's cooperation included turning in a recorded conversation with Raniere about a policy of branding women involved in a secret subgroup of women in the cult.

The actress was facing 17 years in prison, though prosecutors asked for leniency given her testimony.

Ahead of her sentencing in 2021, Mack released a statement that publicly apologised to her victims and other women that were victimised by Raniere.

"She cannot undo what has been done, and she will have to live with the regret for the rest of her life," her lawyer said. "But Ms. Mack still holds the potential to be valuable to society – as a family member, as a friend, as a helper to those in need and as a cautionary tale."

The NXIVM cult has been explored in documentaries such as HBO's The Vow and Starz's Seduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult, as well as the BBC World Service's Outlook.
