Will Smith Revives Box Office with Big Opening for “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” at $104.6 Million Worldwide

This comes amid a slew of summer box office contenders performing poorly upon release

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are proving that not all hope is lost for the summer blockbuster season.

The beloved Bad Boys duo released the fourth installment in the series, titled Bad Boys: Ride or Die, on June 7, and quickly snagged the top spot in box offices internationally over the film's debut weekend.

According to Comscore, Smith and Lawrence's newest project secured $56 million at the domestic box office and an additional $48.6 million internationally, bringing the film's total global box office debut to $104.6 million.

This figure greatly exceeds the global box office returns of all other summer blockbuster contenders for the year so far, with second place, IF, netting $33.7 million in its first three days, according to Comscore.

One of the other hotly-anticipated films of the summer, Deadpool & Wolverine, was initially slated to release on May 3, but will now release on July 26 due to delays endured as a result of the SAG-AFTRA strike that shuddered Hollywood from July 14 to Nov. 8, 2023.

Before the sequel's weekend success at the box office, Smith was hoping to make a big-screen comeback with the latest installment in the Bad Boys franchise, a film industry source recently told PEOPLE.

"Bad Boys is not a risk," the source told PEOPLE. "It's a good piece to see him soar. A talent as ambitious and financially successful as Will does not go away with one mistake."

“He needs to keep box-office success alive," the insider added.
