Sodexo awarded new £38m-a-year Royal Stoke contract affecting 1,000 staff

Outsourcing giant Sodexo will continue providing services to two Stoke-on-Trent hospitals for another decade in a £38 million-a-year deal. Sodexo Health and Care provides catering, retail and 'soft' facilities management services to Royal Stoke University Hospital and Haywood Hospital as part of a private finance initiative.

The firm has now secured a new 10-year contract covering both sites with University Hospitals of North Midlands, which runs the Royal Stoke, and Haywood operator Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. Around 1,000 Sodexo staff are employed across the two hospitals, in areas such as portering, patient catering, retail, security, helpdesk, waste and pest control.

Philip Leigh, CEO Health & Care, Sodexo UK & Ireland said: "This is a significant milestone in our partnership with Royal Stoke University Hospital and Haywood Hospital. As a purpose-led business, we continue to support the trusts with their social value commitments, aligning our ambition to their Sustainable Development Management Plan through initiatives such as an energy saving plan for both hospitals. We will continue to seek ways in which we can support both organisations in providing the highest standard of care for the people we jointly serve every year."

UHNM chief executive Tracy Bullock said: "We are very proud of the partnership we have built with Sodexo. Our focus on joint working has enabled us together to continue to improve standards. Our 2023 PLACE scores are testament to this and our achievement of above national average scores across all areas assessed are a direct result of our collaborative approach."

UHNM scored 95.43 per cent for food and 99.85 per cent for condition appearance and maintenance in the Patient-Led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE) last year, compared to national average scores of 90.86 per cent and 95.91 per cent respectively.

Maybe you don't have that feature in Germany. Maybe you should. But here, customers love it.” Mercedes, as well as Volkswagen, both told Reuters they’re working to deliver those so-called “wow effects” for Chinese buyers.
