Sofia Coppola Joins the MUBI Podcast for a Season About Fashion and Film

The worlds of fashion and film are tailor-made for each other in Season 5 of the critically acclaimed “MUBI Podcast.”

The new season of the global streaming platform, production company, and film distributor’s ongoing audio series debuts January 25, and IndieWire announces this year’s slate of guests and topics below. Titled “Tailor Made” and hosted by arts and travel reporter Rico Gagliano, the documentary podcast’s newest installment is available on all major platforms and via MUBI’s publication, “Notebook.”

Each episode of the season “tackles a landmark movie that captured a major fashion look of an era, and then decodes what that look meant — to the culture that spawned it, the people who wore it, and the audiences who watched it on screen,” per MUBI.

From Jean Seberg’s inimitable style in Jean-Luc Godard’s “Breathless” to a two-part exploration of how fashion folds into Sofia Coppola’s entire career, this season features insights from two-time Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter (“Black Panther”), “Do The Right Thing” cinematographer Ernest Dickerson, director Franc Roddam (“Quadrophenia”), fashion designer Anna Sui, director and documentarian Kevin Macdonald, and Sofia Coppola herself.

“Quadrophenia” (from 1 February)

Detailing the long road from England’s early ‘60s mod explosion to the ’79 cult classic that helped inspire a second wave of well-dressed UK rebels.

“Do the Right Thing” (from 8 February)

The story of how Spike Lee and Ruth E. Carter created the explosive film’s red hot ’89 street style.

“Sofia Coppola: Try This for Size” (two-part episode from 22 February and 29 February)

A two-part, career-spanning retrospective of Sofia Coppola’s work, tracing the way her films’ costumes and style track her central fascination: young women’s search for identity. Features conversations with Coppola and a slew of collaborators, including costume designers Stacey Battat and Nancy Steiner, cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd, producer Roman Coppola, and many more.

“High & Low — John Galliano” (from 7 March)

The season concludes with a special one-on-one interview with director Kevin Macdonald about his new documentary that looks at the career of fashion designer John Galliano and his controversial fall from runway stardom.
