Solihull Council to spend millions fixing roads across borough - every area to benefit
Solihull Council is planning to spend millions of pounds fixing roads across the borough left in poor condition. A comprehensive rescue plan, which will see the authority spend around £6 million repairing pothole ridden and poorly-maintained stretches, looks set to take place from April.
Essential works will include resurfacing, patching and pothole repair, and will be welcome news to motorists who have battled the worst driving conditions in years. The AA said it had received 632,000 callouts to vehicles damaged by road defects last year, including cars with punctures, an increase of 16% compared with the previous 12 months and the highest since 2018, when extreme cold weather affected the road network.
The AA and RAC reported the highest figures for at least five years and criticised local councils and also the government for a lack of permanent repairs. Data obtained by Accident Claims Advice through a Freedom of Information request revealed that Solihull Council have more than 90 roadworks planned in a bid to tackle driver woes.

Over the next financial year which runs from April 2024 to March 2025 it aims to spend approximately £6 million maintaining roads. The claims service added that local councils are obligated to ensure all roads are maintained to a good condition, and fix them in an efficient manner when potholes are identified.
BirminghamLive contacted Solihull Council for more information on the road repairs plan. A council spokesperson said: “The roads listed are still being assessed to determine the extent of maintenance work required at each location. Any identified for intervention will be added to the maintenance programme for 2024-25.
“The £6 million figure covers a range of other maintenance activities as well as any planned resurfacing work from the 2024-25 schedule.” The local authority added that the list is "not an exhaustive list" of planned road maintenance taking place across the borough.
