In the town centre of Burnley, there’s one word that keeps being repeated – change.

When talking about the issues affecting them in the general election, no one seemed particularly hopeful about the prospects of either main party getting in.

One woman, 55-year-old Heather Lineker summed up the feel of the town when she expressed her apathy for both Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer.

The former NHS worker said: “Both of them are a waste of time, we need someone new in to shape it up a bit.”

These feelings were shared by Joseph, 34, who said: “I’ve kind of washed my hands with it and whatever will be will be.

“Keir Starmer, I think he’s a bit more down to earth with the people but also I feel like if any government got in, nothing would change too drastically.”

For 83-year-old Frank Evans, the main issues in the election next month are the NHS and the economy, with him saying that he wants prices to go down so people can ‘live a life’.

He said: “We need a change, and we’ve got to have one, and we’ve got to have a change with people that can afford to do it.

“These smaller parties keep shouting about this and that but they haven’t got the power to do it”

Burnley voted in conservative MP Antony Higginbotham in the 2019 general election, who is standing for re-election against seven other candidates in July.

These interviews are part of Reach’s nationwide vox pop project called '5000 voices', where reporters are speaking to people across the country about the issues affecting them ahead of next month's general election.
