Sonia Sotomayor’s security shoots alleged carjacker near her DC home

An attempted carjacking outside the home of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor resulted in the alleged suspect being shot by an on-duty U.S. marshal, sources said Tuesday.

The incident occurred early Friday on the 2100 block of 11th Street in Washington, D.C., when 18-year-old Kentrell Flowers allegedly pointed a firearm at two marshals in an apparent carjacking attempt, TMZ reported.

The Metropolitan Police Department said two marshals were parked in an unmarked government vehicle around 1:15 a.m. when a silver van approached them.

Flowers proceeded to exit the van, approach the driver’s side door and aim a gun through the window. One of the marshals responded by firing four shots, hitting Flowers in the mouth, according to legal documents.

Another marshal allegedly responded from a separate vehicle and provided first aid to Flowers. He reportedly suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he was later arrested.

The Metropolitan Police Department’s internal affairs unit is investigating the shooting. A federal complaint said that a .40 caliber Smith & Wesson was found in Flowers’ pocket after the incident.

He now faces charges in federal court, including attempted carjacking and assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers using a dangerous weapon.

It’s unclear whether Sotomayor was home at the time of the incident.

Carjackings in Washington, D.C., have reportedly been an increasing problem in the past year. Texas Congressman Henry Cuellar was carjacked at gunpoint in October, near his residence in the Navy Yard of D.C.
