Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will start filming soon, but without actors

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is currently set to begin production, just without its cast.

The film and TV industry has been rocked by the current strikes, first by the writers union (WGA) and now by the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA). Major projects have been put on pause, at every stage of production.

Some projects have tried to do what they can without the striking talent, from filming scenes only involving actors working under UK union Equity, or in this case, without actors at all.

While Sonic is a CGI heavy film, it still needs motion capture performed by actors, and there are plenty of human characters that the furry heroes interact with, which is why Screen Daily is reporting that the crew is just gathering together to film some plate shots in September.

Plate shots are essentially background shots, without people in them, that can be used for reference and compositing in post-production, which shows how limited the work is that's able to be done presently.

Originally, the third movie was intended for release in December 2024, but whether the strikes will delay this remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, it was recently confirmed that filming on Paddington in Peru will continue in the UK without star Rachel Zegler, who is striking. The third instalment of the franchise will follow Paddington as he returns to his homeland.

King Ivory, starring Iron Man 3 actor James Badge Dale has been one of 39 projects granted a SAG Interim Agreement which also allows filming during the strikes as it is deemed "truly independent" of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

Both Sonic the Hedgehog movies can be streamed on Paramount+, while the second is also available on NOW/Sky Go.
