Sophie Turner Addresses the Infamous Coffee Cup on “Game of Thrones:” ‘We Were All Kind of Pointing Fingers'

“It caused quite a bit of controversy on set, actually,” the actress said before adding that the fighting was reminiscent of 'The Traitors' show

Sophie Turner still has a latte to say about Game of Thrones’ notorious coffee cup mistake.

In honor of the actress’s cover story for the June issue of British Vogue, the Game of Thrones alum blindly taste tested British takeout. Turner, 28, admitted to some of her controversial food takes (“I only eat pizza with ketchup,” she said unabashedly in the clip) but also talks about the GoT food scandal.

Back in 2019, during the fourth episode of the series’ eighth and final season, fans spotted a major, 21st century faux pas.

There was a disposable coffee cup in plain view, in front of Emilia Clarke’s character Daenerys Targaryen, on a grandiose dining table. Though the disposable cup is only on screen for two seconds, viewers spotted the mistake.

Two days after the “The Last of the Starks” episode had aired on May 5, 2019, Max digitally removed the cup from the scene. But it was too late. It became a massive meme and users on X (formerly known as Twitter) were quick to joke about it.

Looking back on the instance five years later, Turner, who played Sansa Stark in the show, still can’t believe that the error wasn’t caught.

“I think it was slightly embarrassing that none of us noticed it,” said the Joan actress. “It was quite glaringly obvious.”

At the time, Max had a lighthearted response to the caffeine controversy and joked on social media: “The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea.”

But, according to Turner, the vibes on set were a little more heated.

“It caused quite a bit of controversy on set, actually,” the mother of two explained, adding that the fighting was reminiscent of another popular TV show. “We were all kind of pointing fingers at each other and it kind of turned into like a game of [The] Traitors.”

She added, “Somebody should have got fired for that one.”
