South Shields former pub Simonside Arms 'severely damaged' after overnight fire
A former pub in South Tyneside suffered severe damage after a large fire overnight.
Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service were called to the Simonside Arms on Newcastle Road after a fire broke out in the two storey building on Sunday night. Three crews of firefighters battled the flames overnight, and nearby residents were advised to ensure all windows and doors were closed due to the smoke.
The blaze was put out around 4am on Monday morning and no-one was injured. However, the roof was severely damaged.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We can confirm that on Sunday 12th May, three crews from South Shields Community Fire Station and Hebburn Tri-Station attended a building fire in South Shields.
"The emergency call was received at 10.05pm, with the first fire appliance being on scene at Newcastle Road within five minutes.
"The roof of the former two-storey commercial property was severely damaged in the blaze.
"No persons were reported. Our crews left the scene at 4.16am on Monday."
