It was a bad night for Labour in South Tyneside, as it suffered a series of losses across the borough - including the deputy leader.

The party remain in overall control of the council - but the number of seats held fell from 38 to 28 in what was a fantastic night for independent candidates. With Labour facing numerous issues locally, there were nine gains for independent candidates.

It was also a successful night for the Greens, which gained a seat from Labour and the Conservatives. It means the Conservatives, who only stood four candidates on the night, have been wiped from the political map of South Tyneside.

Labour now hold 28 of the council's 54 seats, while the Greens hold 11 and the remaining 15 are held by independents. Labour's poor performance was put down to an ongoing bin collection strike, as well as an "inadequate" rating of the council's children's services by Ofsted.

The party is also dealing with the fallout of controversial claims around long-serving former council leader Iain Malcolm.
