Yahoo News Spanish triathlete gives up his medal to competitor who went the wrong way
Spanish triathlete Diego Méntrida has been praised on social media after sacrificing his third place win in the 2020 Santander Triathlon, after realising his competitor, British athlete James Teagle had taken a wrong turn.
Teagle was on course to win third place in the competition, which took place in Spain last weekend, when he accidentally made a wrong turn metres from the finish, running into a fence. Méntrida had overtaken him, but stopped when he realised, letting Teagle go ahead and take the top tier win.

‘He deserved it’ the Spanish triathlete later said in an interview.
Footage of the race has since gone viral on social media, with people all over the world praising Méntrida for his sportsmanship.
According to the Spanish newspaper El Mundo, the race organisers awarded Méntrida the same prize money - €300 (£274) as Tegal.
In an Instagram post on Saturday, Méntrida wrote, ‘This is something my parents and my club taught me since I was a child. In my view it should be a normal thing to do.'
