One dead, 22 injured after speeding vehicle strikes pedestrians in New York City's Times Square

A speeding vehicle has struck pedestrians in New York City’s Times Square, killing at least one and injuring around 18 people.

The New York Police Department says the incident is not being treated as terrorism, and confirmed that one man had been arrested.

They Tweeted: ‘One male in custody in the #TimesSquare vehicle collision. It is believed to be an isolated incident, it remains under investigation.’

Reports say police are testing whether he was under the influence of alcohol.

The car ended up partly on its side after crashing into a pole on the corner of Broadway and W 45th Street, one of the world’s most popular tourist locations.

Hundreds of thousands of people pass through the bustling commercial area every day.

A witness told Reuters news agency that they saw one person covered with a bloodstained blanket after the collision, which occurred at around 17.00 BST.

New Jersey resident Jude Memeh witnessed the incident and told Yahoo News he saw the red Honda Accord flip onto the sidewalk. He said: “When I looked, I saw […] the driver started running. The police and people on the sidewalk started chasing him.”

One witness told Fox News: “The car was driving the wrong direction up Broadway before mounting the sidewalk.

“It seemed the driver was intent on causing maximum damage.”

“People were being hit and rolling off the car,” said Josh Duboff, an employee at the adjacent Thomson Reuters headquarters, who jumped out of the way to avoid being struck.

Television footage showed police officers restraining a man in a dark T-shirt and placing him in a police car.

President Donald Trump “has been made aware of the situation in Times Square and will continue to receive updates”, his spokesman Sean Spicer said.
