Artificial intelligence is coming to Spotify, giving subscribers a new way to enjoy the latest music with a programme that is tailored specifically for them, called AI DJ.

The aptly named product is a personalised AI guide that will learn each user’s tastes and then choose what to play next based on their likes and dislikes, introducing them to new songs while also reviewing old favourites to determine what will work for them.

Though this might seem similar to Spotify’s daily playlists on paper, AI DJ will not only curate a playlist for users but also provide commentary around the tracks and artists that are featured in the lineup with a voice that is described as “realistic.”

AI DJ will deliver a playlist of songs on a daily basis to users, and it will also continually refresh its guide based on the feedback given by the person listening.

Spotify’s AI DJ feature has already been launched in the US and Canada, and a Beta version of the feature is being rolled out in the UK and Ireland on Tuesday, 16 May.

Tom Connaughton, Spotify’s Managing Director, UK and IE, said in a statement: “We know that our users love personalised experiences, so we’re confident that DJ will become the next beloved Spotify feature to re-discover old favourites and find something new.

“It was really important to us that the product felt truly tailor built for music lovers in the UK and Ireland - for instance, so they’ll be provided with cultural commentary around some of their favourite artists and tracks.

“Users who tune in to use the DJ feature right around launch may hear about how Arlo Parks is releasing her new song at the end of May alongside her first collaboration with Phoebe Bridgers or how Jazzy is the first Irish woman to top the Spotify charts there. It’s these touches and details that are really winning DJ users over.”
