Spurs make Newcastle claim they wouldn't have allowed as FFP 'secret' is revealed

Ange Postecoglou has admitted that he 'certainly' would not have allowed Spurs to travel to Australia if the Londoners had Newcastle United's demanding schedule this season.

Spurs, like Newcastle, immediately jetted off Down Under on Sunday following the final game of the Premier League campaign. The two teams will meet in a post-season friendly in Postecoglou's native Melbourne on Wednesday.

Spurs will fly back to England afterwards, but Newcastle will stay out in Oz to face the A-League All Stars on Friday. Kieran Trippier has admitted it is 'not ideal', given that it is a tournament year for the England international and those playing in the European Championships and Copa America, but the veteran stressed 'we’ve got to do what’s right for the club for the club to move forward' as the Magpies look to grow their fanbase and boost revenues.

Eddie Howe, similarly, has previously stated that he was not saying 'I want to go', but the Newcastle boss 'understood the club's position'. So did Postecoglou and his players share such concerns?

"Our situation is probably a little bit different from Newcastle's because they've had a European season and the Champions League," the Spurs boss told reporters. "It's been a big season. We haven't.

"It's no secret that part of this is exposure but also revenue for us and I certainly wouldn't have allowed it to happen if we were in Europe this year and had a bigger game schedule. I probably would have said no to it and I don't think the club would have expected us to go.

"If we're in Europe next year, I don't think you'll be seeing this happen. I don't think it's ideal, but each situation is unique.

"For us, on the back of our season, to play one more game two days after the end of the season, there's substance to it for us. We had a discussion with the playing group really early on about it and they understood why we were doing it and we all made a commitment to go. That's what's going to happen."
