‘Spy Kids’ Filmmaker Asks $8.9 Million for a Snazzy Waterfront Home in Texas

After nearly six years of ownership, Robert Rodriguez has decided to part ways with his ranch-style home high above Lake Travis in the Texas capital of Austin. The veteran filmmaker—probably most known for his work on movies such as Sin City, Spy Kids, and From Dusk Till Dawn—is asking $8.9 million for the waterfront spread, which he acquired back in October 2018.

Originally designed by noted modernist architect O’Neil Ford, who is widely acclaimed for crafting the Trinity University campus and Little Chapel in-the-Woods, the property was built in 1962 and underwent an extensive remodel in the late 1990s at the hands of designer/builders Dick Clark and David Dalgleish. Described as a “seamless blend of historical charm and modern luxury” in marketing materials, the dwelling has been nicknamed The Bond House by its owner for its “sophisticated ambience and international allure of the 1960s Sean Connery James Bond films.”

The midcentury-modern home flaunts floor-to-ceiling glass in almost every room.

Featured are four bedrooms and five baths in nearly 5,200 square feet of living space that boasts hardwood floors, exposed brick walls, and soaring wood-beam ceilings throughout. An eye-catching solarium is equipped with an indoor pool and spa, with outdoor amenities including a funicular that descends to a private two-level dock and 200 feet of waterfront footage, plus a waterfall-clad courtyard, a built-in barbecue, a lengthy walking path, and a three-stall carport nestled alongside a motorcourt.

Tucked away on a woodsy, bluff-top parcel spanning almost 4 acres, the brick structure is secluded behind gates. An arcade entry leads to a sky-lit foyer, which flows to a spacious great room sporting a chandelier-topped dining area and a living room centered around a wood-burning fireplace flanked by built-in shelving. Floor-to-ceiling walls of glass stretching across the entire space provide picturesque water views.

A cozy fireside family room connects to the kitchen, which is outfitted with stone countertops, an eat-in island, and top-tier stainless appliances. Other highlights consist of a posh primary suite flaunting a seating area overlooking the lake and a tiled bath equipped with dual vanities, a soaking tub, and a steam shower.

The voluminous great room holds a dining area and a fireside living room.

Per the listing held by Dara Allen and Monica Fabbio of @properties lone star Christie’s International Real Estate, the house served as both a writing oasis and a hidden retreat where the San Antonio-born director, screenwriter, producer, cinematographer, editor, and composer could unwind after busy filming schedules, all while enjoying the secluded pool area and lake breezes.

“Driving just 15 miles from my studio to the Bond House, I’d start my weekend feeling like I was in another country,” Rodriguez said in a press statement. “I’d go right through the great room with its pitched ceilings to the shaded and enclosed pool area, feeling that amazing lake breeze and watching the sunset while sipping a shot glass of tequila. I would instantly feel like I was in another country and completing the most relaxed weekend, even though it was just beginning.”
