The St Helens South and Whiston constituency was created for the 2010 general election.

It has been held by Labour ever since, with Shaun Woodward and then Marie Rimmer representing the constituency in parliament. For this election, the constituency has undergone some boundary changes, with parts of Whiston and Cronton becoming part of the new Widnes and Halewood seat.

The St Helens South and Whiston seat now includes the areas of Prescot South, parts of Whiston and Cronton, Bold, Lea Green, Eccleston, Rainhill, St Helens town centre, Peasley Cross, Fingerpost, parts of Sutton, Thatto Heath and West Park.

Marie Rimmer has represented St Helens South and Whiston since 2015, having previously served as leader of the borough council. She stood again for the Labour Party in this election and won the seat.
