The second season of CBS All Access' Star Trek: Discovery is shaping up nicely, with the tease of the introduction of Section 31 and the return of Captain Pike, so now it's in a position to start announcing guest stars.

Which brings us to the casting of stand-up comedian and One Mississippi star Tig Notaro, who's landed a guest star role in the show's second season.

Tig is best known for her deadpan stand-up comedy routines, and has previously starred in series including The Office US, Suburgatory and Fresh Off the Boat, as well as One Mississippi, which she also created, directed and co-wrote.

According to Deadline, Notaro will play Chief Engineer Denise Reno of the USS Hiawatha, a ship that has so far only been seen in the Star Trek franchise in video game Starfleet Command, and is affiliated with the Federation Starfleet.

CBS is yet to confirm which episodes Notaro will appear in.

Also going unconfirmed by CBS for now is when exactly the second season of Discovery will actually premiere, with co-showrunners Gretchen J Berg and Aaron Harberts previously confirming that they don't even have a target date just yet.

Season one concluded earlier this year and ended with the crew of the USS Discovery being interrupted by a distress signal from the USS Enterprise, helmed by Captain Pike, who'll be played by Inhumans star Anson Mount.

It's not the first time the prequel series has given a nod towards The Original Series either, having previously featured Rainn Wilson as the conman Harry Mudd – one of the most popular villains from the '60s incarnation of Star Trek – as well as Spock's father Sarek.

All we need now is for Spock himself to pay a visit to his adoptive sister Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green).

Star Trek: Discovery airs on CBS All Access in the US and Netflix internationally, including the UK.
