Star Trek: Discovery will break new ground for the franchise by introducing its first black female lead in Michael Burnham, played by The Walking Dead's Sonequa Martin-Green.

The actress told Digital Spy that while she wasn't originally a fan of Trek, she feels that "it was a part of [her] upbringing".

"It was on TV – both The Original Series, as well as Next Gen – but I never sat down and deliberately watched it," she said. "However, for some reason, I still feel as if it was a part of my upbringing because I was very much aware of it."

It's clear, though, that Martin-Green has swotted up on her Trek since, crediting the franchise's first female captain – Star Trek: Voyager's Janeway, played by Kathryn Mulgrew – as paving the way for her own character.

"Kathryn Janeway led the way," she said. "But I certainly had my freak out moment... and I had to collect myself and sit down in gratitude. That's what helped me focus myself and not be stagnated by the overwhelming feeling of paralysis.

"This is so important. But what we're doing is a day-by-day experience, so we have to take it day by day. We have to approach it that way, so that we don't get caught up in the magnanimity of it. That's what I've been doing."

Star Trek: Discovery will premiere on CBS and CBS All Access on Sunday, September 24 at 8.30/7.30c and will be available the following day on Netflix in the UK.
