Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is bringing his seriously cool indie credentials to the galaxy far, far away, and part of that will apparently be jamming with the sort of musicians you would never expect on a Lucasfilm soundtrack.

Johnson posted a song written by John Darnielle (better known as The Mountain Goats), and has declared that it's totally canon now.

Allow us to introduce you to 'The Ultimate Jedi Who Wastes All the Other Jedi and Eats Their Bones'.

"John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats recorded this, and I'm suddenly regretting that I didn't ask him for his story ideas earlier," Johnson wrote under the song, which he uploaded to Soundcloud.

It probably means that the story of a Jedi with a taste for "the dust of Jedi bones piled up like parsnips on his plate" won't be part of Episode 8, although it would give us some clue about what Luke Skywalker has been up to since Return of the Jedi (and why the Jedi could never be fully re-established in the face of his cannibalism).

We'll be holding out for 'The Ultimate Jedi: A Star Wars Story' spin-off.

Darnielle has 15 studio albums under his belt, and has written songs referencing wrestling, HP Lovecraft and The Exorcist star Linda Blair that definitely prove his geek credentials.

He published his first novel, Wolf in White Van, in 2015 and his second book, Universal Harvester, will be released in 2017.

The Last Jedi will star the late Carrie Fisher alongside Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver and Andy Serkis.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be released on December 15.
