Step into the world of nomadic life in Egypt

STORY: (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) NOMADIC BEDOUIN, EID ABUHAMED, SAYING:

"We are the Arab Bedouin nomads. Today we are here, next week we can be in Gharbia, close to Cairo, Fayoum, we don't have a specific place to live."

Location: Kafr El-Sheikh, Egypt

The Abuhamed family is part of Egypt’s El Dawaghra tribe

consisting of 305 families of mostly livestock herders

For generations they have moved from one place to another

living without running water, schooling or electricity

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) WIFE OF EID ABUHAMED, THANAA, SAYING:

"The difference is that I used to live in a house with walls, where people live permanently, but when I came here to live in the fields it was a very difficult lifestyle at first, a very difficult one. I'm used to it now. I have children and I'm thankful."

The family lives off the land

selling livestock where they can

They only spend a few days to several weeks in the same location

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) NOMADIC BEDOUIN, ELSAYED ABUHAMED, SAYING:

"I really wish for one thing for the Arab nomads. We don't have access to good education, so we can't do much. If a man is old, he has no pension. There are poor people who can't afford things, and there is nothing done to help them. This has a major impact on us. People are living in the mud and it is very difficult for them, they have endured so much humiliation. If someone's child is sick, only God knows what might happen to them. If a child is taken to a public hospital instead of a private clinic, it won’t receive the same attention that it would receive from a private doctor in a clinic. There is a major difference."
