Now wife Steph has spoken about the revelation, saying she will always support the husband she has been married to for 27 years.
In a statement to The Sun, she said: "I love Phillip, as much today as I ever have, and always will.
"At the same time, we've been awestruck by the strength and love of our precious girls, even as they've been trying to make sense of it all for themselves.
"Although this is difficult for us all, I support Phillip in this taking this brave step and I will still be there, holding his hand.”
She also lauded family for being "so supportive” and said people should be proud “to live their own truth".
In a previous interview with The Sun On Sunday, Phillip admitted he was unsure what his future holds but said he, Steph and their two grown-up daughters “will always be a family”.
