Britons will be heading down to polling stations today (July 4) for the first general election since 2019.

Those who have registered to vote should have already received their polling cards, detailing information like where your local polling station is.

It’s also a good idea to take your polling card down to the station with you when you go to vote, along with your photo ID.

Can I still vote without a polling card?

You can, but it could make the process a bit quicker if you do bring your card with you.

If you don't have it, all you need to do is remember your name, address and ID.

When at the polling station, staff will ask for your details, check you photo ID before crossing your name off the list and stamp your ballot paper.

The paper, which contains the candidates standing in your constituency, will then be handed over to you.

What can I do if I've lost my polling card or it hasn't arrived?

If you are registered to vote, you should have received a polling card by now or very soon. This tells you where you will have to go to cast your vote.

If you have not received one you should contact electoral services, but your polling card is not necessary to have on the day in order to vote, so long as you’re registered and have photo ID with you.

Polling stations are open from 7am to 10pm, and on arrival you'll be asked to confirm your name, address and ID.

You'll be given a ballot paper where you mark an X to the right of the candidate you want to vote for.

How do I know I’m registered to vote?

If you have not received a poll card but think you should or are otherwise unsure if you’re already registered to vote, contact your local Electoral Registration Office.

They will be able to tell you if you are on the electoral roll. If you are and you have a photo ID on the day, you will be able to vote even without a polling card.
