Fears are growing as a terrifying storm from Bermuda is expected to batter the UK in the coming days, according to new weather maps predicting gale-force 55mph winds. While it may feel like summer this weekend with forecasters predicting highs of 26C - potentially marking the hottest day of the year - things are set to take a drastic turn for the worse.

Weather experts have flagged a more "unsettled" outlook post this short-lived sunny spell and radar images show a brewing thunderstorm jetting straight for the UK. WXCharts' projections reveal an intense rainfall system forming in the mid-Atlantic towards the end of the weekend.

Early next week, this detrimental weather front will veer across the ocean reaching the British Isles, making its mark on Monday, May 13, and Tuesday, May 14. Across most parts of the country there is the prospect of downpours of around 2-3mm per hour, especially along the western coast, with gusts of wind expected to reach 55mph.

Switches in our weather patterns are also anticipated by the Met Office starting this Sunday due to a developing low-pressure system emerging from the Atlantic. In Bristol, showers are expected to begin on Monday morning and become heavier into the afternoon and evening. More rain is expected on Tuesday so people would be well advised to make the most of the sunshine over the weekend.

Its deputy chief meteorologist Tony Wisson has voiced his concern, saying: "Many places will start fine and warm on Sunday, though it is likely to become cloudier from the west or southwest during the day. This will be accompanied by scattered showers, which could be heavy with thunder."

The UK will experience more sun and rain in the coming days, with UV levels expected to be high. Brits should make sure they have enough suncream stored up, as UV levels are expected to be high throughout the weekend, reports the Mirror.

From Friday to Sunday, the forecaster UV level is at 6 in London and the south of England, which is regarded as "high exposure". Moderate exposure is forecast in northern England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The Met Office said on X (formerly Twitter ) that members of the public should "make sure you stay protected whilst out enjoying the sun", with hayfever patients also warned to prepare for increased amounts of airborne pollen.
