Flood warnings remain in place following persistent rain in parts of the country.

Flood warnings are in place for some parts of England after days of wet weather lashed the country.

More than 200 people were evacuated from a holiday park in West Sussex on Tuesday after the River Arun burst its banks. A yellow weather warning for rain came into force on Wednesday, covering western areas of Scotland – with forecasters warning of “very heavy and persistent” rain throughout the day.

Thursday had been forecasted as a drier and milder day, according to the Met Office – but days of wet weather has seen the Environment Agency issue 19 flood warnings, meaning flooding is expected. West Hampshire, Tewkesbury and the Wylye Valley are among the areas affected.

Another 102 flood alerts are in place – meaning flooding is possible. Affected areas include Newmarket and south-east London.

Heavy rain battered parts of the UK on Wednesday, particularly Northern Ireland, northwestern England and western areas of Scotland, but much of central England and Wales experienced a milder day.

More rain is expected in western and north-western parts of the country later on Thursday Evening. However, drier and milder weather is generally expected in the run-up to the weekend, according to forecasts.
