'Stranger Things' season 5 premiere title reveal sparks fan theory frenzy

Stranger Things day has left fans of the Netflix series with hope that a popular character could be revived from the Upside Down.

The streaming service celebrated one of its most popular titles with a day dedicated to it on 6 November which included a Roblox watch party and the launch of new merchandise.

But the most talked about moment from Stranger Things day was the unveiling of the cover from the season five script, which announced title of the first episode for the forthcoming instalment as "The Crawl".

A tweet showing the page was captioned: "season 5. chapter one. the crawl. happy stranger things day"

It immediately sent fans into a meltdown of theories over what it could all mean - with many referencing the Wikipedia entry explaining the term "dungeon crawl".

The entry reads: "A dungeon crawl is a type of scenario in fantasy role-playing games in which heroes navigate a labyrinth environment (a "dungeon"), battling various monsters, avoiding traps, solving puzzles, and looting any treasure they may find."

One fan retweeted a screenshot of it and asked: "can u confirm or deny"

Others wondered whether creators The Duffer Brothers could be referencing Metallica's song 'Master Of Puppets' which Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) played to ward off villain Vecna, before finally succumbing to an apparent death in the Upside Down in season four.

The lyrics include the line "Come crawling faster/come obey your master" which many hoped were a clue that the popular character could return.

One person tweeted: "Hmm. Vecna’s gonna be someone’s Master, but who?"

Someone else wrote: "I have too many questions!!! What crawls? Do the demobats get out? Does Eddie crawl out ALIVE? Does Vecna now crawl due to injury?"

Another fan wrote: "Eddie Munson is gonna crawl out of the upside down isn’t he."

One person shared their theory: "my quick two cents: - since a dungeon crawl is basically a short campaign where you have to escape from monsters in a maze/dungeon, we might get to see how the hawkins gang made it out of the upside down/what happened during the 2-day skip. - we might get glimpses of (kas)eddie."

Someone else added: "if “the crawl” being the first ep of s5 of stranger things DOES include eddie munson coming back then i do need him to come back to “night crawler” by judas priest and no i will not accept anything else"

However, with season five not filming until next year and expected to stream in 2024, many fans were frustrated by the long wait to find out what happens.

One person tweeted: "THE DUFFERS REALLY KNOW HOW TO MAKE THE FANS FREAK OUT, NOW TELL ME WHY THE TITLE OF THE FIRST EPISODE IS "THE CRAWL"?? ARE YOU GIVING US A CLUE THAT EDDIE IS ALIVE?? HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO WAIT 2 YEARS TO KNOW THE TRUTH??!"

Another added: "The Crawl could mean so many things. It could be an Eddie reference or return, a DnD reference, or a metaphorical baby reference, like you have to learn to crawl before you learn to walk. Whatever it is, it's gonna drive me crazy until season 5 drops."
