Street fight breaks out near mosque as men attack each other with weapons

Three men have been arrested after a fight involving weapons broke out on a street near a mosque.

Police were called to Carlton Street in Brierfield to reports of an 'ongoing fight', with several of the offenders 'carrying weapons'. They arrested three men aged 24, 26 and 40 on suspicion of violent disorder.

The incident happened near to Sultania Mosque and officers said it is 'being treated as an isolated incident between parties known to each other'. No serious injuries were reported during the incident on Tuesday evening (May 14) and patrols have been stepped up in the area.

An investigation is ongoing to 'identify others potentially involved in criminal acts' and anyone with information is being asked to contact police.

In a statement, Nelson, Brierfield and Barrowford Police said: "You may be aware of some disorder in Brierfield yesterday evening and we just wanted to let you know what we had done about it. Our officers were called to Carlton Street at 7.54pm to reports of an ongoing fight, with a few individuals carrying weapons.

"We have attended and arrested three local men – aged 24, 26 and 40 – on suspicion of violent disorder. Nobody was seriously injured and this is being treated as an isolated incident between parties known to each other.

"Our enquiries are very much ongoing to identify others potentially involved in criminal acts. We will have increased reassurance patrols in the area in the coming days as a precaution.
