Andrew Western was returned as Labour MP for Stretford and Urmston with an increased majority of more than 16,000.

Pollsters predicted an easy Labour hold - and an upset highly unlikely in the constituency - after Mr Weston's by-election victory two years ago. And they were proved to be correct - the 39 year-old polling a total of 22,642 votes. Conservative Mark Cornes came second with 6,492 votes.

Mr Western, on a turn-out of just 25.8 per cent on a bitterly cold by-election night in mid-December, 2022, secured a majority then of 9,906.

The by-election contest was called in response to former Labour frontbencher Kate Green stepping down to become deputy mayor of Greater Manchester.

Speaking at the time, he said the result sent a 'strong message' to Rishi Sunak’s, now ended, government.

At near 5am on Friday morning at Lancashire Cricket Club, he sent an even stronger rallying cry over the Labour landslide nationally - slamming years of Tory 'chaos'.

He said: "I want to thank the people of Stretford and Urmston who have placed their faith in me and the Labour Party yet again with an overwhelming majority. I will not let you down. I am honoured to be your representative.

"This has been an incredible evening. Change was promised and change has been delivered. After 14 years of chaos, I look forward to playing my part in that change."

A lifelong Trafford resident, Mr Western grew up in Timperley and joined the Labour Party aged 17.

He became leader of Trafford Council in 2018 and was selected twice as the Labour Parliamentary Candidate for Altrincham and Sale West in 2017 and 2019 – reducing the Tory majority on both occasions - before triumphing in the 2022 Stretford and Urmston by-election. Reform UK polled third.

The constituency which includes the areas Bucklow-St. Martins, Davyhulme, Flixton, Gorse Hill & Cornbrook, Longford, Lostock & Barton, Old Trafford, Stretford & Humphrey Park and Urmston.

The turn-out figure was 61.4 per cent, down eight per cent from the 2019 general election.
