Strictly Come Dancing star Adam Thomas has opened up about tearful calls to his wife as rehearsals for the BBC show continue.

The Emmerdale and Waterloo Road star is paired up with Luba Mushtuk, with the pair making it through to Week 4 to dance the Waltz to 'I Wonder Why' by Curtis Stigers.

It's not all been plain sailing, though, as Adam has revealed the emotional phone calls he has shared with wife Caroline Daly over the course of time-consuming rehearsals, which have led him to miss his family.

“Absence definitely makes the heart grow fonder because I’m constantly ringing her going, ‘God, I love you so much’," he told The Sun.

Continuing, he said that Caroline had a response that was just as tearful as her husband's.

"She just rang me, crying, going, ‘You don’t know how much it means’," he said.

“I’m so used to being at home all the time as well. We are definitely missing each other. It’s the biggest emotional rollercoaster you could possibly ever imagine. I never in my wildest dreams thought that it would be as tough as it is.”

Adam and Luba have survived three weeks of the BBC dancing reality show, after performing a Mario and Luigi-themed Jive to 'Take on Me' from the Super Mario Bros Movie.

The pair found themselves in joint seventh position on the leaderboard following Movies Week, alongside Angela Rippon and Kai Widdrington.

Previously, Adam spoke about nearly saying no to Strictly, telling Digital Spy and other media: "I'd been putting it out there for so many years, when they actually asked me to do it, I was like, 'I don't know if I want to do it now'.

"But I'm so happy that I did, because it's one of those shows I’ve always wanted to do."

Strictly Come Dancing airs on Saturdays and Sundays on BBC One, while spin off Strictly: It Takes Two airs on weeknights on BBC Two. Both shows are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
