What did you miss?

Strictly stars Giovanni Pernice and Anton Du Beke joked that they realised they’d been doing the "wrong dancing" when they saw a Flamenco dancer in Spain.

The pair have their own new BBC show, Anton & Giovanni's Adventures in Spain, which follows their travel escapades. At one point during filming they ended up in a bar where they saw a lady performing the traditional dance.

During an interview on The One Show, the TV stars said they were transfixed watching the woman strut her stuff at the nightspot – and revealed it got them questioning their own technique.

What, how, and why?

“She was the oldest lady to dance Flamenco,” explained Pernice, who is one of the pros on the BBC ballroom show. “Because obviously for us, dancing a lot of Paso Doble, Flamenco, you know, we do love the dancing, we love the style, but when you specifically go to see where the dance was born and raised, it was unbelievable to watch.

“They have the sort of technique that we didn’t even know existed!”

“It was incredible,” agreed Du Beke, who went from being a Strictly Come Dancing pro to one of the judges. Pernice chimed in: “We watched each other for five seconds and we say, ‘We’ve done everything wrong in our lives’.”

“Thirty years of wrong dancing!” Du Beke said.

“The way that she was doing it,” Pernice went on. “At some point she stopped and she was like, ‘Oh I’ve been dancing for Fred Astaire'.”

Du Beke continued: “She goes, ‘Oh yes, I’ve danced with Bob and Eric and Fred and all these guys, and Frank Sinatra, and John from down the road.' And we went, 'Sorry?'” It was "extraordinary," he added.

What else did the Strictly stars say?

Du Beke said filming the travel programme with Pernice was a great experience. The star's mum was from Spain and he spent a lot of time there when he was younger, and he said that he'd wanted to show it to friend and co-star Pernice.

"It was brilliant," he said.
