RMT train cleaners across the country are also striking on Friday, as well as Saturday.

Cleaners for companies including Churchill, Bidvest Noonan, and Atalian Servest are demanding £15 an hour, company sick pay, decent holidays and good pensions, the RMT said.

The two-day action will affect Avanti West Coast, GWR, Northern, GTR and South East Trains, as well as cleaners working on Network Rail High Speed contract, the union said.

In addition, Environment Agency workers were due to launch a weekend of strikes at 7pm on Friday evening until 7am on Monday in a long-running dispute over pay.

Unison said staff have had a "terrible deal" which amounts to one of the worst wage rises paid to public sector workers.

Amid the ongoing action, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and Unison, which represents nurses and other health workers, was set to announce the result of a ballot over a Government pay offer on Friday.

Members have been voting on a proposed deal which includes a 5% pay rise this year and a cash payment for last year.

Here is a look at the latest strikes taking place over the next few days.

The action involves cleaners for companies including Churchill, Bidvest Noonan, and Atalian Servest and will affect Avanti West Coast, GWR, Northern, GTR and South East Trains, as well as cleaners working on Network Rail High Speed contract, the RMT said.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: "Contracting out on the railways is one of the most perverse and exploitative practices in the industry.

"It is leading to our members in the cleaning grades barely scraping by on poverty wages and appalling terms and conditions.

"RMT is calling time on these multimillion-pound contractors. They now need to pay up and use their generous dividends and profits and invest in their workforce."

Environment Agency workers are set to strike from 7pm on Friday (14 April).

Unison said the walkout, which will last across the weekend until 7am on Monday, marks a "significant escalation" of industrial action that began last year.
