Strong wind weather advisory for the Isle of Wight

ANYTHING from a barbecue in the back garden to cross-Solent travel could be affected by potentially strong winds forecast for the Isle of Wight, a local weather expert has warned.

The Isle of Wight Met Service has issued a 'wind advisory' alert for tomorrow (Friday).

The forecast is for strong winds between 6am and 3pm.

An area of low pressure will move rather quickly in from the west through tomorrow, bringing with it a mixture of a strong winds and occasional rain.

South-westerly wind gusts could potentially reach as high as 50mph around exposed coastal areas and hills, although it will be closer to 40-45mph elsewhere.

POSSIBLE IMPACTS, EFFECTS AND MEASURES

• Leaves, twigs and other tree debris falling on to roads and walkways.

• Large waves around western and southern coasts and, also, into the western Solent, leading to hazardous conditions for small watercraft.

• Disruption to outdoor events, especially where temporary structures such as tents, gazebos and marquees are being used.

• Possible delays and cancellations on cross-Solent travel.

Jamie Russell, of the Isle of Wight Met Service, said: "It should be noted the wind will be below our weather warning threshold, but we still offer advisories and alerts when the wind could potentially lead to a few problems."
