Stuart Armstrong stretchered off for Southampton as Scotland Euro 2024 injury misery piles up

Stuart Armstrong was stretchered off as Southampton lost to Cardiff this afternoon.

Saints' promotion hopes took a blow by losing out in Wales but there was also more misery for Steve Clarke as the midfielder picked up an injury towards the end of the match. It's obviously early days and there will be further confirmation in the coming days but early reports suggest it could be a serious one.

He is the latest Scotland player to suffer injury in the build-up to Euro 2024. Fellow midfielder Lewis Ferguson was recently ruled out after suffering a cruciate ligament injury while playing for Bologna against Monza, after a tremendous season in Serie A for the former Aberdeen man.

Clarke has serious problems at right-back too. First choice Aaron Hickey faces a race to be fit after being out since October for Brentford. He won't play again this season but could recover in time to make it to Germany.

To make matters worse, alternative in that position Nathan Patterson recently hurt his hamstring during Everton's drubbing against Chelsea. He's out for the season and is up against it for the Euros too.

The manager has to name his 23-man squad after facing Finland in a friendly on June 7.
